Because I Promised: Integrity for Women Leaders

Written by Claire Knowles on . Posted in Courage to Become, Latest News, Leadership for Women Leaders, Lights On!

Are you a Woman Leader? If so, that means you cannot be hesitant; you have to follow your plan—act—hold your vision and move forward!  And do what you said you were going to do, in the way that you said you were going to do it.

For me, this has been a banner week for moving forward. Interestingly, just when I’m on a high note, there’s always someone wanting to bring you down or throw you off course, that tests your resolve, that tests your integrity.

I was on a high note, because I was planing to deliver the remaining two checks that I’d promised to give to the YWCA in concert with my successful Lights On! Book launch. (Amazon Best Seller!) The promise was to provide 50% of the proceeds of the book sales from the launch to four YWCA entities. Why the Y? Because, like me, and paralleling my work, they are about Empowering Women.  The YWCA’s Empowering Women programs touch the lives of over 2,000,000 women and girls in positive ways every year. Which YWCA’s?  As I’m a snowbird, I chose the Y in which I’m a member, the Y closest to my home community and the Y in Tampa/St. Pete where I winter. I thought that the National YWCA in Washington DC should also be included.  Entirely my designated choice, and entirely my timing.

A colleague called me before the final two check deliveries were made to suggest that I diverge from this plan, and instead, provide the checks to a different entity that she believed was also a worthy recipient. I said, “No, thank you.”  Then she escalated her pressure scheme…inserting her personal rationale and self-interest. Finally, I ended the conversation, simply by sharing, “I’m staying on course. I’m going to do what I promised I would do. I’m following through on my plan.”  And I did!
Because I promised!

Staying in integrity feels so good!
